Global Audio Project

Call for Participants

Hello,

My name is Michelle Bowen. I am an artist from the United States, living in the State of New York. If you are reading this, I hope that means you want to be the single person to represent your country in a global audio art project I am creating.

This project focuses on room tone—the subtle sound a room makes when no one is speaking. It’s a quiet presence we often ignore, yet it carries the character, emotion, and spirit of a space. I hope to gather one of  these unique “heartbeats” from each country around the globe.

By sharing the silence of your room with me, you are offering a small but meaningful piece of your world. Each recording will then be combined into one collective global sound—symbolizing peace, connection, and our shared humanity.

I encourage you to participate! To do so, please follow the directions below.

Submission Guidelines:

1. You must be a citizen of the country you represent.

2. Choose an indoor space
A room in your home or another meaningful indoor location (no outdoor recordings).

3. Pick any time of day.
Others and pets may be present as long as everyone stays silent.

4. Prepare the environment:

  • Turn off or unplug noise‑making items (fans, window A/C units, music, phones, etc.).

  • Keep normal appliances running (e.g., refrigerator, lights).

  • Close all windows and doors.

5. Set up your recording device:

  • Use any phone, tablet, laptop, or digital video recorder.

  • Ensure your battery is charged.

  • Mute notifications or use Airplane Mode.

  • Open the camera and select Video mode (not Cinematic, Slo‑Mo, etc.).

  • If using a phone, record in landscape (see example below).

  • Point the camera anywhere in the room and avoid covering the microphones.

6. Record:

  • Try to remain still.

  • Record 90 seconds (a little longer is okay).

7. Send your recording:
michellebowenart@gmail.com  or +1‑518‑281‑2987 via: email, iMessage, Whatsapp, LINE  and include:

  • Your Name

    • Tell me if I may use your full name publicly; otherwise share a preferred name or choose “anonymous.”

  • Your Country

  • Your city/town/village, plus region (state, province, prefecture, etc.)

  • Optional: A selfie taken after recording.

Thank you for considering this invitation. If you have any further questions, please reach out to me at the above contact options. I am deeply grateful for your time and look forward to including your unique room tone in this global art project.

Note: This is a labor‑of‑love art project with no expectation of profit. If unforeseen profits occur, they will be donated to a recognized peace‑focused organization.

With warm regards and heartfelt appreciation.

Michelle Bowen
